Umbilical hernia

Surgical repair when spontaneous closure does not occur or there is a risk of incarceration.

An umbilical hernia is an opening in the abdominal wall at the umbilicus, through which abdominal contents can protrude under the skin. Small umbilical hernias in young foals sometimes close spontaneously as the foal grows.

With larger hernias, when spontaneous closure does not occur, or when there is a risk of intestine or other tissue becoming trapped in the hernial opening, surgical repair may be indicated. During surgery the hernial contents are checked and the abdominal wall is carefully closed.

The approach is determined individually, based on age, the size and shape of the hernia and the quality of the surrounding tissue.
