Orthopaedics & sports medicine
Lameness examinations as first or second opinion, pre-purchase and sport examinations, OCD screening, radiography and ultrasonography.
Lameness is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A structured lameness examination localises the pain and identifies its cause, so that treatment can be targeted. Existing images and findings from your own vet are taken into account; further diagnostics are only performed when they add value.
Examinations
- Lameness examination
- As a first or second opinion, with or without treatment.
- Pre-purchase and sport examination
- Clinical examination and, by agreement, diagnostic imaging tailored to the purpose of the examination. At the clinic or on location.
- OCD screening
- Radiographic screening of young horses for osteochondrosis (OCD). Screening can be carried out separately at Cavalyx; based on the results, you decide yourself whether to schedule surgery.
- Radiography
- Digital radiography.
- Ultrasonography
- Ultrasound examination of tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissues.
- Endoscopy and gastroscopy
- Examination of the airways and the stomach: see Gastroscopy & endoscopy.
What to expect
Appointment
When the appointment is made, the clinical signs and previous examinations are discussed so that enough time is set aside.
Examination
A thorough examination takes time; allow for a long appointment.
Discussion
Explanation of the findings, the possible causes and the treatment options, with a cost estimate.
Follow-up
Your own vet is kept informed. Re-examinations take place when medically necessary.
After the examination
Not every lameness needs surgery. Sometimes rest, adapted training or treatment by your own vet is enough. If surgery is indicated, the options, the expected outcome and the costs are discussed in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral from my vet?
No, you can book an appointment yourself. With your consent, your own vet is kept informed and previous reports and images are requested.
How do I prepare my horse for a lameness examination?
If your horse is on painkillers or other medication, check in advance whether and when it should be stopped: it can mask lameness. Bring the passport and any previous reports and images.
Which radiographs are taken during a pre-purchase examination?
The views required are agreed beforehand, according to the purpose of the examination.
Can I attend the examination?
Yes. That way the findings can be discussed with you straight away.
