Castration

Under general anaesthesia on the operating table, including cryptorchid horses (rigs).

At Cavalyx, castrations are performed under general anaesthesia on the operating table. This allows us to work in a clean environment under anaesthetic and surgical control, with good visibility of the surgical field and a controlled recovery afterwards.

The technique is tailored to the horse. Age, anatomy, use and the size of the inguinal rings all play a role. In a young horse an open technique on the table may be sufficient. In an adult stallion a technique in which the wound and the internal structures are closed is more often chosen. This reduces the risk of complications such as eventration.

In sport horses a closed wound can also be an advantage: aftercare is often simpler and the horse can return to work sooner, in a controlled way.

Cryptorchid horses (rigs) also call for a tailored approach. The position of the retained testicle is first determined carefully. Depending on its location, different surgical techniques can be proposed.

The price of a castration therefore depends on the chosen technique and the complexity of the procedure.
