Soft tissue surgery
Skin tumours
Sarcoids, melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas and other skin lesions.
Skin tumours are relatively common in horses and can vary widely in behaviour, location and rate of growth. Common types are sarcoids, melanomas and squamous cell carcinomas.
Treatment is tailored to the type of lesion, its location, its size and the extent to which surrounding tissue is involved. Sometimes surgical removal is sufficient; in other cases a combination with additional treatment is indicated.
For tumours in more difficult locations, such as around the eye, the genitals or close to joints, careful planning is particularly important: removing enough tissue while preserving function and wound closure as far as possible.
Not every skin mass needs to be removed immediately. A proper assessment helps distinguish lesions that can be monitored from lesions where timely treatment matters.
